Love that gets low
Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. – John 13:5
In John 13 Jesus does something that still catches me off guard.
He kneels down and starts washing His disciples’ feet. On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus wasn’t focused on himself, he was focused on us.
I think about that moment often. The Son of God, fully aware of who He is, choosing to take the lowest place in the room. Not to prove a point, but to show us what love actually looks like.
Peter struggled with Jesus’ posture. He resisted a love that willing to become so low. If I’m honest, I’m a lot like Peter. I love Jesus, but I still resist the parts of Him that confront my pride. I want to follow Him, but not always lower myself.
But Jesus doesn’t separate love from humility. He shows us that to belong to Him is to become like Him. And that means choosing to love no matter how low we get while doing so. Even to the point of death.
Prayer: Jesus, teach me to love like you, with humility and willingness to serve.
Reflect: Where is Jesus asking me to lay down pride and serve someone this week?
