SAMNet from anywhere

SAMNet from anywhere

You can access your SAMNet subscription from anywhere, not just your home computer. If you have a license to use SAMNet on a U3 drive, you can plug your U3 drive in to any Windows computer and use SAMNet just as if you were at your home computer. If you have questions about how to obtain a license to use Serotek products on a U3 smart drive, please call (612) 246-4818 or (866) 202-0520, or send an email to info@serotek.com

If you don't have access to a U3 drive, you can still use your SAMNet subscription on the road by visiting www.satogo.com
and logging in with your credentials.

Once you've gained access to SAMNet from a computer away from home, you can check your email, look at the weather, browse your newspaper, and everything else you're accustomed to doing when you're using SAMNet at home. In addition to accessing content on SAMNet itself, sometimes you need access to documents or other information that resides on your home computer. SAMNet makes it possible for you to access, edit, move and copy materials on your home computer, even when you're working remotely.

To do this, you must first make sure that your home server is enabled on your primary computer. When logged in to SAMNet at home, access preferences by pressing alt+p, and then choose the "manage my home server" option. If the home server is not currently running, you'll see an option labeled "start home server". Press enter on this option to run the home server. If the home server is already running, you'll see an option to stop it. Do not choose this option if you want to be able to access the contents of your home computer from elsewhere.

Note that within this dialogue, you'll also see an option to edit your remote control preferences. If you wish to establish a full remote connection to your home PC, described in the section labeled "Remote Access Options for System Access", you'll want to edit these preferences to allow remote access.

My Files, At Home, and Away From Home

The "My Files" option located in SAMNet Home allows you to access the files on the PC you're currently using, as well as files located on your home computer.

Opening a File

When you choose the "My files" option from SAMNet Home, you'll be presented with a list of folders on your local computer. These may include your media library folder, files you've downloaded while using SAMNet, your SAMNet documents, your Windows Desktop, and more.

To select the file you'd like to open on your local computer, first choose the folder you'd like to browse from within the folders list. You may navigate the folders list with your up or down arrow keys. Once your focus is on the correct folder, just press enter or tab to the "open folder" button. Now, you'll see a list of files inside the folder you've chosen. Note that if the folder you've open has subfolders, you'll land in the subfolders list and will need to tab to the files list to see a list of files in the folder you've chosen.

Once you find the file you want to open, press enter to open it. Note that files such as .zip files and .exe files cannot be opened for security reasons, but you can open documents, mp3 files and the like.

Downloading Files from Your Home Computer

If the file you need to access is on your home computer, you'll first need to tell SAMNet that you want to browse your home machine, not the machine from which you're currently working. To do this, tab to the "my files at Home" option once you've opened "my files" from SAMNet home. When you do this, you'll be presented with the same folder and file lists you see on the local computer, only these files are located on your home machine.

When you want to work with one of these files, you'll need to choose the download button, in order to retrieve the file you'd like to work on from your home machine. At this point, the standard SAMNet dialogue will appear, asking if you'd like to open or save the file. Choose the desired option and the action will be carried out. If you chose to save the file, you'll still have the option to open it from the dialogue once the save is complete. If you chose to open the file immediately, the file will appear in the application with which it is associated and you can now review or edit it.

When you're done making changes to the file you've opened, simply choose the save option in the application you're working from and the file will be uploaded, with the changes you've made, to your home computer.

Manipulating Files and Folders

You can rename, move, copy, and delete, folders or files by first selecting the file, or folder that you wish to change, then activating one of the buttons, such as delete, move, or copy. You can also create a folder by choosing the "create folder" button with the space bar. Note that each of these options is available both on the computer you're currently working from, and from the "my files at Home" dialogue.
