Downloading Content

downloading is the process of copying items on the internet to your local computer for later retrieval. when encountering audio, you are given the option to download or stream. If you only want to listen to it once, and probably never again, choose stream to listen immediately without taking up any space on your hard drive. However, if you want to listen to it at a later time, or transfer to another device, choose the download option.

when downloading software, a window will open telling you the name of the file you are about to download. This is an edit box so you may change the name to something more meaningful to you. If you are happy with the file name, or simply don't care, just press enter to begin the download. If you prefer to have the file placed in another location on your hard drive, tab once and press the spacebar or enter key on the button that says "Choose Another Location." You can then browse to the place where you want the file to be copied; such as c:\music, d:\software, e:\podcasts, etc. If you decide you don't want this file, simply tab to the cancel button, or just press escape.

Once you start the download, a window will open offering information about the status of the transfer to your computer. Information includes time elapsed, time remaining, transfer speed and percentage completed. You may tab through these messages to hear what most matters to you. When the transfer is complete, simply press the spacebar or enter key on the close button. Unless you specify otherwise, all downloads will be placed in a directory called "My Downloads." You may access my downloads from SAMNet Home, or by browsing to the "My Downloads" directory with Windows Explorer.

If you are downloading a file that will take some time, you can press the escape key to close the status window. The download will continue in the background out of sight. To retrieve files after closing the status window, choose "Active Downloads" from SAMNet Home.
