Using SAMNet With Other Screen Readers

For those who do not use System Access as a primary screen reader, it is still very easy and convenient to access SAMNet's spectacular feature set without the need to unload your other screen reader first. Here's how it's done.

Using SAMNet with JAWS Versions 12 and Later

1. With JAWS 12 running, open SAMNet Browser.
2. Press MODIFIER+F3 to let the next key stroke for JAWS through.
3. Press JAWSKey+6 to open JAWS settings center and ENTER to accept the new configuration file: "SABROWSER".
4. In the resulting search box, type, "sleep" (without the quotes).
5. Press DOWN-ARROW until you hear JAWS say "Sleep Mode Disable, miscellaneous and press SPACEBar twice to toggle it to enable and unload the synthesizer.
6. TAB twice to the apply button and press SPACE-BAR to activate it.
7. TAB to the OK button and press SPACE-BAR to activate it.
8. Begin using the SAMNet browser with JAWS in sleep mode.

Using SAMNet with JAWS Versions 11 and Earlier

1. Taking care that the SAMNet browser is not currently running, start JAWS. 2. Press JAWSKey+F2. (JAWSKey is insert or capslock depending on which JAWS keyboard layout you use. 3. Press the letter "C" to quickly navigate to the configuration manager, then press enter to open it. 4. Press CTRL+N to create a new configuration file. You will be prompted for a file name. 5. Type "sabrowser" without the quote marks, and press enter. 6. Press ALT+s to open the set options menu, then press the letter "A" to quickly navigate to and open the advanced options dialog. 7. Press the space-bar to check the sleep mode enable check box. 8. Press the tab key once, then press the space-bar to check the unload synthesizer check box. 9. Press the enter key to activate the OK button in order to dismiss the advanced options dialog.. 10. Press CTRL+S to save the sabrowser configuration file. 11. Press ALT+F4 to dismiss the JAWS Configuration manager.

The next time you start the SAMNet browser, you'll hear SAMNet speech and will be able to use all the navigation keystrokes and other hot keys described in SAMNet help. When you switch to a Windows application outside SAMNet, JAWS will speak in that application as expected.

Using Window-Eyes with SAMNet

1. Taking care that the SAMNet browser is not currently running, start Window-eyes. 2. Start the SAMNet browser. 3. With the SAMNet browser in focus, press CTRL+\ to activate the Window-eyes control panel. 4. Press ALT+F followed by the letter o for the open file sub-menu. 5. Press "s" to open the set file list. 6. SHIFT+TAB and type "s" to select the silent.000 file and press enter to open it. 7. Press ALT+F followed by the letter a to open the save as dialog. 8. Press enter to accept the sabrowser.000 file name. 9. Tab to the yes button and press enter to accept the prompt to associate the file with sabrowser. 10. Press ALT+F4 to close the Window-eyes control panel.

The next time you start the SAMNet browser, you'll hear SAMNet speech and will be able to use all the navigation keystrokes and other hot keys described in SAMNet help. When you switch to a Windows application outside SAMNet, Window-Eyes will speak in that application as expected.
