The day after Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor, John Park, and Jermaine Sellers were eliminated from the American Idol semifinalists, they opened up about their experiences on a press call.
Something the contestants have been battling the first few weeks of live shows has been their nerves. Sixteen year old Haeley Vaughn said, The first week was really tough. We were all super nervous and scared and worried about our song choiceAnd nerves are always going to play a huge factor in what we do on the show. She explained that the nerves kind of settled down week two, but they were definitely still there, for me anyway. If I would have continued to be on the show, I think as the weeks went on, my nerves would have kind of gone away because I would have gotten more used to it, but theyll always be there.
After Haeleys performance on Wednesday, Kara talked about Haeleys voice and the need for it to mature a bit. Haeley doesnt disagree, I think that more experience and more time working on my vocals would be good. I think experience is always better for someone, especially since Im only 16, and this is the first really big thing that Ive done ever. Ive never performed in front of millions of people before. Ive never even performed in front of 100. And so, I think its always ... read more

One of the first questions people faced with a cancer diagnosis ask is, "What caused this?", especially when it strikes young children who don't typically get cancer. Sometimes you learn why; a DNA defect could foreshadow certain types of colon cancer for instance, or an unhealthy behavior such as smoking jacked up your risk. But it could also be something lurking in the environment, a carcinogen that has entered the water supply, soil or the air where we live, work, play or attend school.
Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), also called progeria or premature aging syndrome, is a medical disorder in which a random genetic mutation causes cells in the body to die at a much faster rate than normal. Its name derives from the Greek and means “prematurely old.” Progeria is so rare it occurs only once in every 8 million births; at the time this article was written, only 62 people around the world were known to be living with the disorder.
Imagine waking up to find a trail of cookie crumbs on the floor and empty food containers littering the kitchen counter and you had no idea how they got there. Either Hansel and Gretel broke into the house or someone is playing a practical joke on you.
Or, you have a bonafide sleep disorder that causes sufferers to eat voraciously while they sleep.
Up to 1 million adults could be sleep eaters, a possible contributing cause of obesity. In fact, a good percentage of patients who attend obesity clinics have been diagnosed with a sleep-eating condition.
Drs. Oz and Breus firmly believe you need 7 hours of sleep a night; good health depends not just on how long you sleep, it’s how good your rest is as well. Dangers of disrupted sleep can include diabetes, obesity and in women, heart problems. In fact, if you’re getting 5 hours of sleep a night, your chances for all these conditions increase by 50%.
Follow this plan to kick out the kids and embrace your REM.
Step 1: Get Rid of the Guilt

Americans spend between 40 and 50 billion dollars every year on cosmetics that promise to keep the aging process at bay. But experts say you don’t have to spend big bucks to see big results. As more and more effective ingredients are discovered, they make their way into lower-cost options. Which means your local pharmacy has effective cosmetics for all your beauty trouble spots at a fraction of department store costs.
Trouble Spot: Bags Under the Eyes
Most Americans don’t think twice about putting their health in the hands of orthodox medical doctors, or their faith in the latest medical technology and drugs. After all, countless lives are saved because of modern medicine.
The decision to have a hysterectomy is never an easy one. Healthy reproductive organs are central to a female's womanhood beginning with her first period at puberty, through pregnancy and childbirth, and ending with menopause. Yet, it is the second most common surgery performed on reproductive-aged women after delivery by cesarean section. More than a half a million of these surgeries are performed in the US every year, which begs the question – how could they all be necessary?
The (In)Dispensable Uterus
Use the foods in this list to create anti-cancer recipes, like feature here and in The Anti-Cancer Cookbook.
Vegetables & Fruits
One in 20 Americans suffers from a crippling anxiety of being in public spaces. They worry that they will have a panic attack with no way to get help. The term comes from the Greek word for the marketplace, agora. To people who suffer from it, the condition keeps them from driving in cars, going to the shopping malls and grocery stores, and, in the most extreme cases, from leaving their homes.
Step 1: Be Accountable
Be accountable to yourself, to your food and to your loved ones. Don’t eat after hours, when no one is around. Avoid having “secret meals.” They take on a life of their own and lead to a lot of shame and guilt afterwards.
Keep a food diary of all your meals, Monday through Sunday, on the refrigerator. This way there are no secrets. By you visualizing what you’re eating as well as having to share this information, you are making yourself more accountable and less likely to cheat.
Nearly 9 out of 10 Americans obtain the food that nourishes their family at the supermarket, spending $100 every week and almost $5,000 annually. Last year, unwholesome heavily processed foods like salty snacks, frozen dinners and breakfast cereals were among the top 10 bestsellers, with carbonated beverages ringing in at #1, commanding a whopping $12 billion in sales.
When fatigue stretches beyond the typical exhaustion posed by everyday life, it can be a conundrum for both sufferers and doctors. After a slew of likely contenders such as heart disease, anemia, thyroid disease, depression or a sleep disorder are ruled out, getting to the source of fatigue gets murky.
You’ve done it…lost 100 pounds, maybe more. But your journey does not just stop once you’ve hit your goal. There are a variety of other physical and psychological challenges that you may continue to face once the weight is off. Here are some tips to think about now that you’ve reached your fabulous goal.
With all the famous cheaters in the headlines these days – SC Governor Mark Sanford, former Senator John Edwards, and Tiger Woods, to name a few – it’s hard not to hear the news and wonder: Could it happen to me? Would I know if the most important person in my life was leading a double one? Or, if it has happened, to ask: Why? Was it my fault? Am I not as attractive as I used to be?
Wouldn't it be wonderful to step into Dr. Oz's Truth Tube and learn if you are at risk for certain cancers? Unfortunately, figuring out the cause of cancer has proven to be intensely complex. We already know that it is not just one thing that causes cancer in everyone. Sometimes cancer makes a beeline when a person inherits a faulty gene or is exposed to a potent carcinogen. And sometimes the cause is impossible to pin down. But there are some factors providing powerful hints when someone is at a higher risk for developing the disease.
Even heroes need to be rescued sometimes. Dr. Oz aids a team of 3 Chicago firefighters who have been ignoring the alarms and have fallen victim to the likes of hypertension, heart disease and obesity. Below is the Drill Plan that Dr. Oz and Rip are recommending to save their lives:
Drill 1: Extinguish Dairy and Processed Foods
Weeks 1-2
1. Sweet Potato
The women of Okinawa, Japan (who also happen to be the world’s longest living ladies) enjoy a purple sweet potato they call Imo every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Rich in beta-carotene and boasting 150% more antioxidants than blueberries, this easy-to-make treat can be simply incorporated into an American diet. And, if you can’t find Imo specifically, our orange sweet potatoes pack a similarly healthful wallop.
2. Turmeric Tea
We all know how much most men love going to the doctor – about as much as they love asking for directions or hitting the mall – which means they need a little incentive to take their health seriously. And here it is: a compelling list of 5 medical tests that are easy to do and can save a man’s life. Pass it on.
Testicular Exam
When probed about the scariest diseases, many doctors point to ones that disguise their warning signs. Known as silent killers, they’re characterized by subtle symptoms that often go undetected. In women, these stealthy life-threatening illnesses strike up to 10 million each year and kill over 100,000.
The following are 5 silent killers in women along and their symptoms.
Uterine Cancer
The first part of the plan is a new take on a Dr. Oz staple: automating your meals. For those working long shifts, like the nurses seen on The Dr. Oz Show, eating 6 smaller meals throughout the day will provide constant energy and prohibit making bad eating choices when you’re starved and there are few options.
Each day, bring 6 mini-meals that you will eat in the same order so there is no room for error.
Mini-meal #1: Protein
Emergency departments around the country function as our nation’s healthcare safety net. We see patients with emergencies and injuries, take care of our nation’s uninsured as well as those insured patients who can’t see their own doctors in a timely manner or can’t wait the weeks or months to get into a specialist. But did you know that emergency medicine is also an integral part to our homeland and national security.
For centuries, disease has been used as a weapon; a strategically placed corpse infected with the plague can bring down an enemy's village in a matter of weeks. Nowadays, with all that modern technology has to offer, deadly viruses and bacteria can be easily engineered in sufficient quantities to bring down adversaries on a much grander scale. Crops, livestock, water, milk and air can become contaminated in one fell swoop to sicken, impair and kill masses in just a matter of weeks.
They seem so easy and straightforward in the movies: you have sex, moan a little, moan a little louder and, voila, you nail the “Big O” every time. But in reality, as many as 15% of women have never experienced an orgasm, and only 1 in 10 report having them during sexual intercourse.
We all have different feelings about high school, the pivotal teenage experience. However, one thing is for certain – everyone wants to go their high school reunions looking and feeling their absolute best.
This week Dr. Oz is helping 3 women get back in shape for their 20th high school reunion. Check out some of the tips that Carolynn, Aimee, and Tara are studying to get healthy.
The Back to School Plan:
Step 1: Tonight’s Dinner, Tomorrow’s Lunch
Parasitic worms are enterprising creatures that force their way into the intestinal tracts of unsuspecting human hosts. Worm eggs can be transferred from a blade of grass to the tips of your children’s fingers; or they can be swallowed at a 4-star restaurant.
The human intestinal tract is the perfect accommodation for these freeloaders. Worms can gorge themselves in the human gut for months or years before they are detected, causing everything from a poor-night's sleep to life-threatening intestinal blockages and malnutrition.
Mineral Powder
Wrinkle Cream

Rule #1: 7 Colorful Fruits and Vegetables a Day
Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables maintain your health and keep you young. Stock your diet with blueberries, spinach, broccoli, raspberries, strawberries, melon, carrots, cabbage, sweet potatoes and peppers.
Rule #2: Make Sister Food Substitutes
Doctors have a love-hate relationship with pain. It can be a precautionary friend or a debilitating foe. Pain can protect against injury by warning people to approach a hot burner, sharp knife or a steep step with caution. Or it can be an important diagnostic tool, a signal that an illness is underway. It can also give injuries time to heal. If you pull a muscle for instance, the body will remain guarded until the pain lessens. But pain can also linger on for months and years causing great suffering and disability, especially at the end of life.
Most of us worry about getting older. Will our health deteriorate? Will we become dependent – or even burdensome – to others? Ensuring wellness and vitality during your golden years starts with establishing a healthy lifestyle that will prevent future illnesses.
First, a quick anatomy lesson: Whether “youth” is defined as physical strength, appearance or the sharpness of one’s mental facilities, it all begins on a cellular level. Telomeres are located on the cell’s DNA and play a crucial role in the creation of new cells.
What’s Your Type?
Environmental pollution is a global crisis that affects all of us on a very local level – at the dining room table. Brand-new studies show that high levels of toxic chemicals are in our tuna salads, our green bean casseroles, and even our apple pies. They threaten our children’s development and put us at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The good news is that you can still eat the food you love and reduce your exposure to these deadly poisons. Follow these straightforward steps to detoxify your family's food supply.
While many know that heart disease is the number one killer of women, what most don’t know is that this is because many women fail to undergo the testing that leads to early detection. As with most conditions, early detection of heart disease, and the resulting treatment, has the potential to prevent a deadly heart attack.
Tailor Your Message
The first rule of communication is to target your audience. Not everyone communicates in the same way, and this is particularly true of different genders. Men tend to report facts with few details, whereas women speak at length with lots of detail to build rapport. Men come to the point first, and add color afterward. Women build up to the point and enjoy the telling of the story. Tailor your approach accordingly: get straight to the point for him; supply the detail for her.
You break out into a sweat. Your heart is racing. You’re trembling, nauseated, and dizzy. These feelings can all be part of your body’s natural fear response. Yet for some, a sudden episode of fear develops into something more severe: a panic attack. A panic attack can make you feel like you are losing control – or even dying. Most people will have no more than one or two severe panic episodes in their lifetime. However, if you are having frequent panic attacks it could mean that you have an anxiety disorder, specifically, panic disorder.
Dieting has become a national obsession and a multibillion-dollar industry. In fact, almost a quarter of all Americans say they are currently on a diet. Given that more than half of us are overweight, eating well and exercising are great ways to get healthy, but there’s one weight loss strategy that can do more harm than good – diet pills.
Few things are as important to our health as getting good sleep. And yet almost three-quarters of Americans aren’t even logging 7 hours per night – the minimum amount we all need to function well. Worse yet, many of us are suffering from a serious sleep disorder that not only compromises our sleep but also puts our lives at risk. If you (or someone you love) has trouble sleeping, read on. A good night’s sleep could save your life.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Everyone comfort eats now and then. Sometimes it is in small ways, such buying an ice cream cone as a pick-me-up after a stressful day at work or nibbling on chocolate when you are hormonal. While small doses of stress eating aren't necessarily physically dangerous, they can quickly develop into a habit. This habit can lead to weight gain or prevent you from losing weight.
Mix together
1 tbsp of Borax powder (find it in the laundry aisle of your supermarket)
3 tbsps of white vinegar
2 cups of water
1 tablespoon of dish soap
1 drop of essential oil such as peppermint for fragrance (optional)
We hear so much about getting rid of pollutants in the environment, but nobody ever talks about the toxins we use in our homes every day. The fact is that many of the cleaners and products we rely on to keep our houses healthy, beautiful and bacteria free are too toxic to be put in landfills or even poured down the drain. So what are we doing keeping them around our loved ones?
The answer is wasting money and putting our health at risk. So, let’s all commit to getting rid of our toxic trouble spots in 2010 by taking these simple steps.
It makes perfect sense that there are some health conditions that favor one sex over another. How could it not? Men and women have different genes, anatomy and predominating hormones. These variances not only influence what symptoms we experience and how we react to treatments, but also our susceptibility to disease in the first place. There are some conditions so closely aligned with women that both doctors and patients overlook them as possible diagnoses in men. But there are 2 noteworthy diseases increasingly crossing gender lines to strike men.
Eighty five percent of all couples trying to conceive will become pregnant within one year. Approximately 7 million, or 1 in 6 couples, will have difficulty conceiving and may need medical help to identify and treat the possible causes of infertility. The good news is that there are treatments now to help almost everyone.
From a purely evolutionary perspective, you’d think that your body would make it fairly easy to get pregnant and keep the developing fetus safe and sound for forty weeks. After all, that’s what ensures that the species and gene pools continue. But not so. About 15 percent of couples have trouble conceiving, increasing with age, and it can be a slippery slope even after conception occurs: About one-third of all conceptions fail. That figure includes ones in which women don’t even know they’re
pregnant.
Pain is the #1 reason patients go to the doctor. While we’ve all experienced some form of physical pain in our lives, our injuries are usually short-lived. For about 35% of Americans, however, pain escalates into a chronic problem lasting 3 to 6 months, or even longer. Approximately 50 million Americans are disabled because of chronic pain.
Many of us go on a diet this time of year, but few lose weight. Studies show dieting only has a 5 to 9% success rate. For the rest of us, restricting what we eat slows our metabolism and leads us to binge down the road (a recipe for weight gain and the #1 diet mistake.) Instead, experts say the key to maintaining a healthy weight is to change how we think about food.
Just as winter can seem endless, so can the colds your children bring home from school. The good news is there are easy ways to prevent infections and to alleviate the pain and suffering they can bring.
The Ears
For some women, the slightest pressure to the most intimate part of her body can be unbearable. The brush of her clothes, the insertion of a tampon, or a partner's gentle touch is instantly transformed into an instrument of pain. The mere act of sitting can be problematic and performing exercise or having sexual intercourse is all but out of the question. The stabbing knife-like pain, burning, irritation and rawness can permeate throughout the pelvic area.
If you’ve ever stood paralyzed in the vitamins, facing the alphabet soup of supplements, fear no more. This is Dr. Oz’s list of critical vitamins that every woman should be taking. And if you know your ABC’s, this list should be easy to remember!
Helpful Hint: When purchasing your vitamins, check for bottles labeled 100% daily allowance on label.
A Multivitamin
Multivitamins fulfill your nutritional needs for the day. Take half in the morning and half at night. Multivitamins contain:
Most of us have heard that married people are healthier than their single counterparts. But new research shows that the state of your union matters more than just being married.
At some point, we’ve all experienced at least a few nights of too little, or restless sleep. Many of us are familiar with the consequences of one or more sleepless nights – sluggishness, poor concentration, irritability, changes in appetite, etc. For the majority of cases, it takes just a day or two to catch up on restorative sleep. Yet for up to half of the population, lack of sleep can turn into a more serious problem: insomnia.
Losing weight isn’t about not eating. It’s about regularly eating foods that are filling and rich in nutrients. All too often, those seeking to lose weight practice deprivation diets. When you don’t eat enough, your metabolism slows and your body senses deprivation and starts and emergency storage of the calories you do consume.
What are Dr. Oz’s tips for avoiding the deprivation diet? EAT! Eat every 3-4 hours and eat healthy foods like those below.
Breakfast
For generations, people have been exploring a variety of approaches to treat the physical, emotional, nutritional and biological effects of illness. In Western societies the practice of medicine mostly relies on therapies that typically undergo rigorous testing for safety and effectiveness before they are accepted into mainstream use. But there are many practices and products that are used around the world that while unproven by Western standards, have provided reassurances and relief of discomfort and distress for centuries.
Often communicated by a trusted source, it’s easy to believe in the healing powers of home remedies. However, it can be difficult to differentiate a successful home remedy from an old wives’ tale. To clear up the confusion, Dr. Oz took some remedies YOU swear by and put them to the test!
Chicken Soup Cures a Cold
Method: We’ve all heard that chicken soup is good for a cold, and instinctively, this makes sense…but does it really work?

Sunlighten™is proud to unveil its mPulse™ Infrared Sauna Series, the world’s first line of saunas with biofeedback capabilities that uses customizable spectrum infrared therapy, set to launch in March, 2010.
We all make resolutions as that glittery ball falls in Times Square. We vow to eat better, drink less, exercise more – and then we don’t follow through. But it turns out there are smaller habits that are easier, and more important, to break. These 7 deadly sins are taking years off our lives and we don’t even know it. Make this year the one in which you made 7 small changes that can add a decade (yes, a decade) to your life.
Deadly habit 1: Not Stretching In The Morning
Since the airing of the premiere on September 14, 2009, Drs. Oz and Roizen have helped thousands of Americans get healthier and happier. Using the principles put forth in their YOU books, a team of medical and wellness experts and endless hours of love and support, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen have broadened America's fitness horizons and trimmed its waistline.
The first week, you’ll be buying more stuff than all other weeks, as you’re gathering the building blocks for your new fridge and pantry (including spices, oils, and other long- term ingredients). We believe in working from the inside of the store out so that heat and bacteria have less time to grow on your produce before you get it home. This list includes both your staples and your ingredients for the recipes on our seven- day sample schedule (see page 275) for two people.
The songs of the season paint a romantic picture this time of year. But the reality is that the holidays, with their inevitable stresses, piles of rich food, and glasses of eggnog, can be very bad for your heart. According to a recent study, heart disease related deaths jump 5% this time of year; that’s almost 1,500 deaths each day. In fact, Americans have the most heart attacks on Christmas Day, the day after, and New Year’s. Here’s how to keep you or your loved ones from becoming one of them.
1. Give Peace a Chance
Are you concerned that you or someone you love could be depressed? We all experience the blues or down moods once in a while; but when these feelings persist and compromise our daily functioning, it can be a sign of depression. Depression is a common disorder that can take a major toll on a person and his or her family. The good news is that help and treatment are out there; although many depressed people never seek them out. It’s imperative to look for the critical signs or symptoms that could mean you or your loved ones are at risk.
The two kidneys that flank the lower spine are exemplary organs. They are multitasking machines charged with controlling the body's fluid balance, filtering the blood of waste and producing a host of regulating hormones. They are not only at the center of the urinary system, but they also have a hand in making red blood cells and vitamin D. When they fail, the breakdown can have body-wide ramifications.
Once upon a time, women were routinely given a diagnosis of hysteria to explain many of their medical ills. This was particularly true if the symptoms were vague, infrequent or were accompanied by psychological distress. Although diagnosis of disease in women has come a long way since then, there are still some instances that hark back to those days. Symptoms in women are still falsely attributed to the rigors of everyday life – work, overscheduled calendars, and caring for family and home.
But sometimes a diagnosis is flat-out wrong.
Learn How to Talk to Your Doctor
Before you go in for your appointment, be armed with information about what’s bothering you and the answers to your doctor’s most common questions. Make sure you can answer the following questions:
Most of us spend weeks shopping for the perfect gifts for our family and friends. The same care should be extended to the food we put on the table, otherwise we could end up giving them something they never wanted – food poisoning. Of the 75 million people who are sickened by food each year, 5,000 die from it.
During the holidays, when we gather round the buffets and potlucks, where bacteria can have their own party, we can increase our chances of joining those statistics without even knowing it.
When most women experience pain down below, they usually immediately attribute their discomfort to menstrual cramping or fibroids. While these 2 conclusions are commonly at play, another lingering and painful condition could be the culprit. It’s called endometriosis and it plagues millions of American women
What is Endometriosis?
Ever hear your grandmother say her arthritic knee told her when it was going to rain? Well, it turns out that research backs her up. It’s estimated that some 60% of people are weather sensitive. For instance, a recent study showed that that a rise in temperature means an increase in tension headaches and migraines. Even more alarming, the number of heart attacks jumps in winter by as much as 50%. In fact, the weather can actually expose our wellness weaknesses. So, pay attention to find out what you can do to stay healthy come rain or shine.
For Heather, the key was to integrate vegetables into her diet, find a healthy dessert alternative and ask for help and support from her family. See if her tips or recipes can make the difference in your life!
Over 3 million Americans are suffering from a hidden epidemic; if you’re affected by bloating, fatigue or joint pain, Celiac disease or gluten intolerance could be responsible. Celiac disease can wreak havoc on your body and even predispose you to liver disease or cancer.
Some medical advice gets passed down from generation to generation with such authority we never doubt their truth. They remain unchallenged mostly because they are completely plausible, despite the fact that there is no solid evidence to back them up. Plus, who would question the common wisdom of our mothers, teachers and doctors who advise us with such conviction.
Here are some unfounded, yet wildly common medical recommendations that even slip past the medical professionals.
1. Sugar makes kids hyperactive
The Internet is full of useful, sound health information. But it is also chock-a-block with scams that prey on your health concerns and your pocketbook. Unfortunately, when it comes to being well, there really are no shortcuts. So, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The good news is that if you know what to look for, it’s easy to protect your family from deceptive marketing and online health rip-offs.
8 Scam-Spotting Secrets
By making smart decisions every time you visit the grocery story, you can greatly reduce your risk of hormone dependant cancers like breast, ovary, uterus and prostate. This simple daily diet contains foods rich in antioxidants, fiber and isoflavones.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) has received relatively little consideration since it was first described in 1988, but the recent finding published in the prestigious journal Science showing an association between CFS and a retrovirus, XMRV has focused media and medical attention on this serious, devastating and debilitating neuroimmune condition.
Here’s a typical meal plan in The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-diabetes (Simon & Schuster©, 2009). The book offers 4 daily calorie levels ranging from 1,500 to 2,250; here’s a day from the 1,700 calorie plan. Carbohydrates in the meal plans range from 38 to 42 percent of total calories, a level that’s satisfying, but easy on the blood sugar. And they come from the healthiest sources—whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy, which keeps fiber high; averaging about 34 grams daily.
We think of milk as one of the healthiest food choices on the grocery shelf, especially for young children who are growing and building strong bones. We travel to work, to play, to visit the people we love, and, when we do, the last thing we want is to get sick. But, unfortunately, crowded airplanes, hotel rooms – even your Aunt Sally’s guest room – are teeming with millions of bacteria and viruses just itching to hitch a ride with you. And at busy times such as Thanksgiving (when some 8 million people board trains, planes, and buses), your risk rises.
Here’s what you need to know to stay healthy and happy for that long-awaited vacation, critical business meeting, or weekend with your long lost cousins.
Every day millions of us snap off the top of a medicine bottle with the hopes that it will prevent, treat or cure each of our many ills. Every time we swallow, inject or rub on a medication that prolongs or improves our life, we trust that it will do more good then harm. But all medicines, even the ones that have withstood the test of time, have some degree of risk, especially when taken with other medicines.

Remember when “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite” was just a cute bedtime expression that didn’t mean anything? Well, those days are over. After 6 decades of living largely bed bug-free, the US is facing a national infestation. In fact, the incidence of bed bug infestation has risen 500% in the last few years alone, and they’re not just in dirty hotels.

If you want to point a finger at factors that cause cancer, viruses don't immediately come to mind as a leading perpetrator. But, after environmental and lifestyle factors, infectious diseases are a leading cause of cancer and the human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prime suspect.
We rely on them to connect us to the people we love, to help us stay organized, and, in an emergency, to keep us safe. But more and more experts are saying that cell phones may pose a very serious health risk – increasing your chance of developing a brain tumor.
That means that over 270 million Americans may be playing Russian roulette with their cell phones every day. Each year, more than 21,000 adults and 1,500 children are diagnosed with brain tumors, and researchers believe some of them may have been caused by talking on a mobile phone.

Bandages, anti-inflammatories, vitamins, cough drops, antacids, thermometers – sound familiar? Chances are you probably have at least one (if not all) of these items living somewhere in your medicine cabinet. It’s also likely that there many items you don’t need: expired prescriptions, over the counter remedies and old makeup. These items are not only taking up space, but may be dangerous for you and your family. So grab a trashcan and a notepad. Today it’s time to give your medicine cabinet a boost with the top 5 essentials you may not know about.
While maintaining a healthy diet can sometimes be difficult, there are 5 nutritional needs found in a multitude of sources that should be incorporated into your daily intake.
Fiber
Integral to digestion, fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Fiber can also lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Add foods like raspberries, steel-cut oatmeal, lentils and cooked artichokes to get your daily dose of fiber.
Vitamin D
When ovarian cancer is discovered early, it has a 90% cure rate, and yet 16,000 women die from it every year, making it the deadliest reproductive system cancer for women. Why? Because 80% of women discover it too late.
Until now, doctors believed that ovarian cancer had no symptoms, but researchers have finally unlocked the secrets of early detection. Their discovery could save your life or that of someone you love.
Hiding from Detection
There is a bouquet of odors wafting from all corners of the human body. These scents are purposeful chemical signals that either attract or detract a potential partner, predator, pest or pal. Your propensity to seduce a mosquito or a lover depends on hundreds of volatile organic chemicals (VOC) that naturally percolate out of glands situated all over the body. For the most part these chemicals are undetectable to the human nose. Sweat is just water and doesn't smell.
You hear about them in the headlines everyday – bacteria in our food, around our homes, even on our body – that are making more and more of us sick, sometimes fatally so. Unfortunately, it’s not just hype. Experts agree that we are facing a superbug epidemic. Harmful bacteria are spreading and growing stronger and more drug resistant. Unless you know what to do, you may be putting your family at risk for a fatal infection. Here is the life-saving information you need to win the war against the bad guys.
Muscle Spasms
From charley horses to toe cramps, a simple way to prevent different muscle spasms is to increase the amount of potassium in your diet; potassium is a mineral that helps maintain the normal function of your heart and nervous system. Potassium-rich foods include: tomatoes, bananas, beets, spinach, lean turkey and beef, beans, and dried fruits like raisins, apricots and dates.
Take Your Sunshine Vitamin
Vitamin D increases serotonin, the mood neurotransmitter. It boosts your immunity, promotes healthy neuro-muscular functions and helps protect you from some forms of cancer. The easiest way reap the benefits of this nutrient is to spend 15 minutes in the sun a few times a week. Be mindful that sunscreen will prevent you from getting adequate vitamin D outdoors; try skipping sunscreen for just 15 minutes.
If the weather isn’t cooperating, get your vitamin D from milk, egg yolks or supplements (1000 units per day.)
The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire was developed by psychologists Michael Argyle and Peter Hills at Oxford University. Take a few moments to take the survey. This is a good way to get a snapshot of your current level of happiness. You can even use your score to compare to your happiness level at some point in the future by taking the survey again. If you are using some of the interventions presented on this site to raise your happiness level, you can see whether your score on the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire goes up as a result.
You don’t need a TV show to tell you that most men hate going to the doctor. It’s like asking for directions – it just doesn’t seem in their DNA. But what you may not know is how much about their health men are keeping from you.
Whether they’re worried it will make them seem less manly, scared what the doctor will say, or just think it’s their job to be strong and silent, American men are damaging their families and their health by hiding important medical information. Here are their 3 biggest secrets and how you can help them break the silence.
Dr. Oz gives his quick tips on keeping your home healthy and safe.
Fungus is a fact of life. There are more than 1.5 million species of the funky stuff everywhere around us – in the air, the dirt, and the walls of our houses. And unfortunately, one of their favorite places to shack up is on our skin. In fact, fungal infections are the number one cause of skin disease. Here’s how to spot the intruders, kick them to the curb, and keep them out for good.
Athlete’s Foot
You go there every week to buy nourishing food for your family, so it may be a shock to learn that there are dangers lurking in your grocery store – and we’re not talking about Double Stuf Oreos.
We’re talking about the fruits and veggies, the meats, and those handy-in-a-hurry prepared meals, all of which can harbor dangerous bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. Last year, 76 million Americans got sick from contaminated food. Over 300,000 ended up in the hospital; 5 million didn’t make it out.
We don’t like to think about them, but catastrophic events such as fires, car accidents, and plane crashes kill tens of thousands of people every year. Experts believe one-third of those deaths can be prevented if you know what to do. So add a few things to your shopping and to-do lists, and take a little time to make sure you, and your family, are ready for anything.
FIRE
People always ask whether buying organic is healthier, and the answer is yes. Eating organic protects you from potentially harmful chemicals such as pesticides. But going green is rarely cheap, and it’s not always essential, which is why we’ve created 3 simple rules for when you should spend your green to go green and when to save your cash with conventional foods.
Nothing satisfies a mid-afternoon slump like a good healthy snack. Snacks can be a between-meal pick-me-up with many nutritional advantages. Snacking helps your metabolism stay well-tuned, keeps you from sabotaging a well-meaning diet and prevents ravenous overeating at mealtimes. It keeps blood sugar level so you aren't irritable and helps you focused. Kids get much of their nutrition throughout the day from snacks and most diets make provisions for snacking.
Menstruation is a normal, healthy process that a woman's body goes through from her early teen years until menopause. As part of your monthly menstrual cycle, your uterus grows a new lining (the endometrium) to prepare for the possibility of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not implant in the lining, then the uterus will shed the endometrium; this shedding initiates menstrual bleeding, otherwise known as your period.

Living in the US we are not accustomed to worrying about the safety of the water coming out of our taps. That's because state and federal standards are in place that help safeguard public drinking water. Still, while the US is among the safest water in the world, tainted water can enter our bodies when we drink, bathe, cook, launder and play – sometimes with catastrophic consequences.
No organ in the human body contributes more to the human experience than the skin. Clear, smooth and glowing skin dominates our aesthetic attention. We spend more time and money on caring for our skin then any other body part. Keeping our 22-square feet of skin healthy is worth the effort and not just for the benefit of onlookers. Proper care can keep the body from harm in many ways.
The largest non-disaster relief free health care clinic took place in Houston's Reliant Center on Saturday, September 26, with over 1,780 people treated who are living without health insurance. View a slideshow of Dr. Oz's experiences, and click here to read about what it meant to him.

As I listened to 14-month-old Analeigha Rivera's tiny heart in the Reliant Center in Houston, I could hear the murmur interrupting her regular rhythm as blood swished through a hole between the main chambers of the heart. An echocardiogram confirmed the diagnosis, so I could show her mother Victoria exactly where the problem was and explained to her that if little Analeigha didn't get supervised care by a pediatric cardiologist, we might miss our window to prevent life-threatening damage.
Humans just can't seem to keep their hands off their faces. They are committed to plucking and popping any imperfections that they can see in the mirror. As tempting as this is, over-enthusiastic grooming can be dangerous if performed in the area of the face called the "triangle of death." This triangle extends from the corners of the mouth to the bridge of the nose.
Most of us have experienced the next-day consequences of sleep loss. Our creativity is dulled, we can't think straight, we become forgetful, clumsy and grumpy. A sleep-deprived person can experience impairments equal to that of a drunk driver. But researchers are learning that there is way more going on during chronic sleep loss besides next-day sleepiness; sleep deprivation can also put you at risk for serious health problems.
You’ve probably heard all about the immune benefits of Vitamin C – but today it’s time to move one letter down the alphabet. It turns out that Vitamin D may actually be the more critical vitamin when it comes to fighting off colds. An important member of Dr. Oz’s anti-aging checklist, Vitamin D plays a number of roles in our bodies, including:
Just a few decades ago patients were passive participants in their health care. They didn't question what they were told by their doctors and accepted their opinions unchallenged. Today, the doctor/patient relationship has evolved; largely because patients are asking more questions, getting more answers and are more active in their own health care.
When people think about a heart attack, they usually imagine the victim grabbing at the chest and collapsing to the ground. While this dramatic version of a heart attack can happen, symptoms are usually less obvious, particularly for women. Sure, women feel the pressure in their chests that men do, but many experience vague symptoms that are not immediately attributed to a heart attack. While generally construed as a man's disease, more women die every year of heart disease than men. To save lives, both patients and doctors need to pay closer attention.
Government agencies inspect and monitor food products to make sure they comply with food safety standards. But you may be surprised to learn that not all the food that reaches our plates has been inspected for contaminants. Food can come from the family farm next door, big agricultural operations or remote regions around the globe. Every change of hands is an opportunity for bacteria, parasites and other organisms to get into our food. Follow these simple rules to keep your family out of harms way.
No body part worries women more then her breasts: Are they sexually appealing? Will they be adequate to nourish my baby? Is that a lump? Throughout a woman's life the breast goes through more changes than a teenager dressing for a date. The question top of mind is, "Is that normal?" But the better question might be, "Is that normal for you?"
Becoming acquainted with the typography of your breast can help you and your health practitioner plot a course of action if necessary.
Breastscapes
You may have heard of zinc before – perhaps as an important ingredient in cold remedies or certain sunscreens (remember those fun colored noses from the 80s?). What many of you don’t know is that zinc is an essential mineral in your diet: the recommended daily allowances for men and women are 11mg and 8mg respectively.
Zinc plays a number of crucial functions in your body:
No routine cancer-screening test brings about more anxiety then a colonoscopy. Not necessarily the worry of results either. It's the test itself that drives people to skip the test. It is invasive, uncomfortable, embarrassing and intimate. It is terribly inconvenient: It takes a day to prepare and a day for the test.
Oh yeah. One more thing. It saves lives.
A man’s penis is not only a measure of his manhood, it can also be a harbinger for hidden health problems. In 80% of cases, erectile dysfunction (ED), the inability to obtain and sustain an erection, can be traced back to an organic cause not related to sexual drive.
The eye might be a window to your soul, but the mouth is the door to disease. While it might be hard to make the connection between tooth loss and a heart attack, what goes on in your mouth can foreshadow many diseases.
Pocket Watch
One look inside the mouth will reveal that there are bacteria everywhere. For the most, part we cohabitate without a worry – but badly-behaving bacteria can collect in gum pockets to cause swelling, bleeding and bone loss that in turn can cause teeth to loosen and fall out.
Since the dawn of modern man, men and women have been struggling to be understood by one another. It turns out that biological differences between men and women extend far beyond reproductive body parts. There are distinct differences in brain structure, chemistry and function that affect what we say, remember, see, feel and hear — all of which might have implications for quarreling couples. If men and women are wired differently, could being aware of this difference help couples get along better?
Brain Biology
Setting lifelong goals, like getting healthier and losing weight, can sometimes feel a bit daunting. However, take a deep breath and remember – the actions you need to take on a daily basis can most likely be boiled down into a few simple, easy-to-remember steps. Dr. Oz’s 99-Second Healthy Eating Plan reminds you of the fundamentals so that you don’t get derailed from your commitment to living right.
Trash the nasty aging food
Just the thought of parasites can make your skin crawl. These uninvited passengers burrow, hook and hunker down to feast on the blood and body of unsuspecting hosts. However, some host-parasite relationships can be mutually beneficial: The bacteria living quietly in our gut help us with digestion and immune function.
Ask someone what heartburn feels like and you are likely to see them bring a fist to their chest and grimace; it’s a symptom more than a condition and it can make you feel like you’re going to spew molten lava at any moment.
As soon as we are able to curl up in bed by ourselves, we fix on a preferred sleep posture; crawling into bed and assuming the same position every night without much thought. Our sleep environment often becomes the object of our aches and pains; the bed is too firm or the pillow is too soft. But it is possible that your sleep posture is to blame. Misalignment during sleep can put stress and strain on the spine, neck, shoulder, hips and jaw which in turn affects how you feel the next day. It can also sabotage your ability to relax well enough to fall asleep.
Most people have heard the word carbohydrate but couldn't tell a good one from a bad one if their life depended on it. But your life does. Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap of late. But before you vote all carbs off the island, learn how to tell a good one from a bad.
In a quest to find out why we favor brownies over berries or Brie over broccoli, we have been more or less tongue-tied. While the smell of a simmering stew can prime the appetite to signal the brain, "something smells yummy enough to eat," the sensors in the nose and back of the throat are not the whole story. It is only when smell joins up with taste perception that the full flavor experience is unleashed.
Researchers have been wondering if our sense of taste influences food choices that ultimately effect body weight.
Chinese acupuncture is finally getting under the skin of dieters by tapping into the body's many hidden energy meridians. The ancient practice of acupuncture helps to heal a host of ailments, and practitioners of Western medicine now embrace it to quell chronic pain, postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, high blood pressure, addictions and weight loss.
Every function of every organ in the body relies on the energy provided by the metabolism of calories. How much energy you need on any given day depends on what you are doing, what you ate and the state of your health. The basic metabolic rate (BMR) refers to the minimal amount of calories you need to live. Some people need only 1200 calories, while professional athletes need 2000.
People with a high metabolism burn more calories than people with a low metabolism.
Kilo is a Chihuahua in danger. His chronological age is 6, but his real age is 10.
While Kilo’s health has lowered his quality of life, it’s not too late to turn back the clock. Dr. Oz has provided Kilo and his owner, Vicky, with 3 tips that are inexpensive, fun and lifesaving:
1. Portion control
Feed overweight pets out of a food puzzle instead of a food bowl. This institutes portion control because a food puzzle has measure lines.
2. Healthy snacking
Try baby carrots, blueberries and celery.
Ask a former smoker how they stopped and you will probably hear that they came armed with a plan. Even if you have tried to quit before, and slipped, you can still quit. You just keep trying until it sticks.
So how do you get an action plan in place? You need to be ready, organized, committed and willing to ask for help. Come up with a list of your reasons to quit: your health, your kids, financial concerns, embarrassment, because Dr. Oz said so. Set a quit date and start a new life without cigarettes.
Here’s a brief overview of Dr.
There may be products in our closets and cupboards right now that can shave years off our lives. They can penetrate our lungs, cause asthma and allergies, poison our liver, damage our hearts, and irritate our eyes and skin. Before Dr. Oz stages an intervention, grab a trashcan and recycle bin and go from room to room to eliminate these 10 age stealers. In many cases there are healthier alternatives you can use instead.

Here are a few simple steps to help stave off infection this flu season.
Nearly 45,000 saliva droplets are propelled from a typical sneeze. Hitching a ride on the saliva are millions of viruses.
Viruses shoot into the air as far as a few feet away. They can survive for hours on paper including money … even days on door knobs and countertops.
Here’s your master plan to fight the flu:
While many fast food restaurants are slowly introducing healthier options to their menus you can improve your chances of making a healthy choice if you follow these 10 tips.
Plan your meals in advance
Oftentimes people duck into a fast-food restaurant because they just don't know what to eat. Take the out the guesswork by planning each meal in advance and writing it down.
Germs are everywhere. Unless you’re living in a Level-4 biocontainment facility, there are germs on the surfaces of everything in your house. Bacteria, viruses and molds are crafty at finding hospitable environments to hang out. They like it moist and dark and can hide in plain sight, sometimes in the most unlikely of places.
Here's where you can catch hidden germs red-handed:
On the bottom of your purse, briefcase or backpack
It's not just a used tissue that's the issue, but also what gets dragged in from the outside.

How long does it take food to digest?
Have you ever wondered what happens to the food you eat? First, it passes through the esophagus. It moves by a wave of muscle contractions that squeeze the food down at about two inches per second. When the food reaches the stomach, it falls into a churning pool of digestive juices. In the stomach, the food is broken down into easily absorbable ingredients: proteins, sugars and fats.
Then greenish brown bile produced in the liver is added to help the breakdown of these fats.
Prayer pose
Start by bringing your hands in front of your heart into a praying position. Say, "Namaste," which means, "The divine within me recognizes the divine within you."
Throughout the entire sequence, remember to take deep belly breaths to fill your lungs with nourishing oxygen and nitric oxide from your nose.

Are you looking for ways to get healthy and peel the years off your body? Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen are back with the ultimate anti-aging checklist. Don't wait until you're falling apart—change the way you look at life and start your path to better health today!
Barbara is 60, but her body is much younger. After 22 years of yoga, regular belly-dancing classes and her passion for reading and writing, Dr. Roizen says Barbara's "real age" is 48.
Sandra is 63, but her "real age" is just 50. Dr.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen are back with more from their book YOU: Staying Young. Dr. Oz has said it's within your power to live to 100—now find out how to do it!
One of the centerpieces of the "You: Staying Young" program is the 14-Day Plan. Dr. Oz says he and Dr. Roizen chose 14 days because that's how long it takes for the brain to reprogram itself with new activities. "In two weeks, chemically, you can actually shift how the brain deals with anything going on outside of you," he says. "At three months we can actually begin to measure life expectancy changes.
It's a subject most people find frightening and hard to talk about—death. In a special report, Dr. Mehmet Oz talks to two people who have faced their mortality—and learned something about life in the process. "We do not do death well in America. Americans like to win, and we see death as losing," Dr. Oz says. "Death is an integral part of this amazing life that we have the ability to live."
In 2003, Kris was a model and aspiring actress. Then she received devastating news—she had a rare form of cancer that was in its most serious stage.
Dr. Oz is here…but today there's a twist! For the first time in the history of The Oprah Show, Oprah will not be hosting.
Since so many men are afraid to go to the doctor, and embarrassed to ask health questions in front of the women in their lives, Dr. Oz is conducting a private forum for the 330 men in the audience—even the crew is made up entirely of men. So where are the women headed?
Dr. Oz has gone to great lengths to tell us what happens inside our bodies…now he's going to show us what's happening in his! Hours before an appearance on The Oprah Show, he swallowed an unusual pill—a tiny camera that takes a photo every half-second and transmits the photos back so they can be seen on a monitor.
Traditionally, doctors have been able to check on problems in the digestive tract only if they could check the stomach or do a colonoscopy.
Anyone who's seen Dr. Oz on The Oprah Winfrey Show before knows that one of his favorite topics is…poop. Just when we thought there was nothing left to say on this topic, we received this anonymous e-mail:
"Dr. Oz: I'm so embarrassed. This morning I had a B.M. [bowel movement], and I looked in the toilet to see if it was S-shaped. I saw what looked like dozens of tiny long worms. How could worms get in my poop? What do I do?"
"That's why Anonymous wants to remain anonymous," Oprah jokes.

What is Rolfing? Is it something that could help ease muscle tension?
If you're plagued by muscle pain, Dr. Oz recommends a technique called Rolfing, which he describes as "even deeper than a deep-tissue massage."
This technique, which was developed by Dr. Ida Pauline Rolf, aims to separate bound-up connective tissues (or fascia), which link the muscles. "Rolfing literally releases the joints," Dr. Oz says. "When you talk to folks about the impact it has on them, a lot of them just stand taller.
Forget the fad diets. Stop counting carbs. Dr. Mehmet Oz has teamed up with Dr. Michael Roizen to develop a diet plan that they say really works.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen want to help New Year's dieters lose weight and inches off their waistlines, once and for all. The goal is to shrink the waist down to the ideal size—32 and a half inches for women and 35 inches for men—and make eating so easy, you'll never realize you're dieting!
In the book YOU: On a Diet, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen offer simple ways to jump start your metabolism.

Tens of thousands of viewers have asked him medical questions, and now Dr. Mehmet Oz is ready with answers. When asking Dr. Oz a question, nothing is off limits!
What is cellulite? Do all women get it? How do we make it go away?
Dr. Oz says that if you have cellulite, point the finger at your family tree—the way your body stores fat is genetic. He says that fat cells, when they're doing their job, suck in as much fat as they can and then grow larger.
"It looks like a huge marshmallow," Dr. Oz says.
In 2007, life was good for Tanya, a 30-something chef who loved to hike, swim and ski. "I felt like I was on a roll," she says. "Like I was going places."
Professionally, Tanya was doing what she loved as a chef for an Idaho catering company. Personally, she had found love. She and her boyfriend, Neil, were talking about marriage.
Then, in an instant, everything changed. On March 19, 2007, Tanya was chopping celery at work when her knife slipped and cut her finger. Since the wound wasn't much deeper than a paper cut, Tanya says she thought nothing of it.
There are plenty of creams, lotions and potions on the market that help you look younger, but today, Dr. Oz is going to show how some people are actually living longer.
"We're going to talk about extreme life extension," he says. "I'm talking about very specifically allowing us to go into our second century of life with the vitality and the bounciness that you have when you're a young person."
Thanks to advances in technology and research on how diet affects the aging process, Dr.
Dr. Oz says the key is to choose the right physician.
Find a physician using the American Medical Association's DoctorFinder.
During your first visit, there are key questions to consider. "When you go to their office, do the other patients … look like you? Are they board certified? Do they get along with the staff?" Dr. Oz says. "If you get along with them, that person becomes your health coach.
For the past two years, Oprah admits she's taken her health for granted. "I didn't appreciate what this body has done for me," she says. After falling off the weight loss wagon and gaining 40 pounds, Oprah says she had a wake-up call that made her thankful for every part of her body—from the tip of her toes to the top of her head.
"I am so grateful for everything. My bones for carrying me. My heart for beating. My lungs for pumping air," she says.
For their latest book, Dr. Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen are tackling a fundamental topic: beauty.
In YOU: Being Beautiful, they have sifted through decades of research, sought out the world's foremost experts and compiled everything we all need to know about how to look and feel more beautiful.
But their analysis is more than skin-deep. Dr. Oz says looking at appearance is actually our hardwired, instinctual way of determining the health and fertility of a potential partner.
In most of the world, the prospect of living to age 100 sounds like a mixed blessing. While a long life is generally good, many people worry that it also equals diminished health and mental function. But that isn't so in the "blue zones."
In four hot spots around the globe, people live to 100 in great numbers. But it's not only about longevity—they live with strength, vitality and happiness.
On most days, the studio audience at The Oprah Winfrey Show is almost entirely women…with just a few husbands, brothers and boyfriends sprinkled in. But today the audience comprises 170 men and 170 women. "A lot of estrogen…a lot of testosterone," Oprah jokes.
What brings today's balanced crowd? Dr. Oz is answering their burning questions about the differences between men and women.
First up is Carrie, who just can't hold her question in any longer. "As women, we all are waiting in line to go to the bathroom.
